Meet Dr Siok Hwee Tan
Qualifications:
MBBS, Grad Dip Geriatric Medicine, FRACGP
Senior Lecturer, University of Queensland Clinical School
Dr Tan graduated from The National University of Singapore in 1994 and spent 10 years rotating through different hospitals and departments, gathering varied experiences, before settling into General Practice. She migrated to Australia in 2004 and worked in The Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide in Intensive Care and Emergency Departments for 1 year before moving into rural General Practice in Gawler on the outskirts of the beautiful Barossa Valley.
Family commitments saw her move again in 2007 to Brisbane, where she has been working full time as a GP since. She enjoys seeing the full spectrum of General Practice presentations and feels very privileged to be able to look after patients from cradle to grave.
She is also heavily involved in medical and non-medical volunteer work, which ranges from cooking, to music, to mentoring and looking after the mental and emotional well-being of colleagues. Dr Tan teaches medical students in her clinic and hopes that they will catch a glimpse of the fulfilment of General Practice.
When not working, she likes to take solitary walks and does not like to be far from her piano, which brings her tremendous joy and soothes her soul.
